The Blinn College men's soccer team came within a goal of extending its season Tuesday night, but a second-half strike by No. 4 Tyler Junior College proved to be the difference in a hard-fought 1-0 loss in the semifinal round of the Gulf South District Tournament in Tyler, Texas.
Despite the season-ending defeat, head coach Michael McBride had nothing but praise for his team's performance.
"Unbelievable effort," McBride said. "The lads executed the tactical plan to the letter. We outworked them in every area except the one stat that counts."
Blinn (11-5-3) battled the nationally ranked Apaches throughout the contest, with the teams playing to a scoreless tie at halftime. Tyler finally broke through in the 54th minute, scoring what would stand as the game's only goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Samir Bristol played all 90 minutes for the Bucs and recorded three saves to keep Blinn within striking distance.
The Bucs finished with a 14-9 advantage in shots and earned five corner kicks compared to Tyler's three. Blinn also held the Apaches to just four shots on goal.
The loss brings an end to a season in which the Bucs were seeking a second consecutive appearance in the NJCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. Blinn made its first appearance in the national tournament in 2025.
"This was the youngest team we have had since 2019, but from the beginning of the season through tonight, the level of improvement we've shown and development we've experienced is remarkable," McBride said. "I am very proud of our men for their effort. This one stings, but we're so proud of these lads."
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
