The Blinn College women's soccer team saw its season come to an end Friday night, falling 6-1 to No. 6 Tyler Junior College in the semifinal round of the Region 14 Tournament at Rankin Field in Brenham, Texas.
Despite the loss, the Buccaneers (10-5-1) put together another memorable season, capturing the Region 14 South Division championship for the second time in program history and advancing to the conference semifinals.
"Playing against a team of that caliber, with so much international talent and experience, we knew we had to be nearly perfect to compete," Blinn coach Alexandria Jackson said. "Going down three goals early made an already difficult task that much harder."
Tyler jumped out to an early lead, scoring three times in the opening 25 minutes. Blinn answered in the 29th minute when sophomore midfielder Mikaela Juliano found the back of the net off an assist from sophomore midfielder Lilly Arellano, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
The Apaches added three more goals in the second half to secure the victory.
Tyler finished with a 10-8 advantage in shots and a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. Blinn goalkeeper Reese Cauthen recorded three saves.
The Bucs' season featured several individual and team milestones.
Freshman forward Chelsea Mentado set Blinn's single-season scoring record with 10 goals, while Cauthen established a program record with seven shutouts.
"I genuinely believe this team overachieved this season," Jackson said. "They faced a tremendous amount of adversity, but what I am most proud of is their commitment to the process. That resilience is what carried us to another Region 14 semifinal and South championship."
Jackson also pointed to the team's performance against some of the nation's top competition.
"The fact that our only losses came against nationally ranked opponents says a lot about this group and what they accomplished," she said.
The season also marked the conclusion of the collegiate careers for Blinn's sophomores, who helped establish a winning foundation for the program.
"For our sophomores, Blinn means more than just soccer. They have helped build something here, losing only nine games during their time in the program," Jackson said. "I am proud of what they accomplished, but even more proud of the people they have become along the way."
