Listen Hear Audiology Center

Less than two months ago, Dr. Robert Herring decided to set up a private practice to better serve the patients he’d come to know in his 13 years in the Brazos Valley. It turned out to be the right move for both the doctor and the patients as Herring's Listen Hear Audiology Center won the 2009 Readers' Choice Award for "Best Audiologist."

Herring worked in a clinical environment prior to starting Listen Hear Audiology Center. In that setting, he handled a high volume of patients and learned to quickly recognize and treat specific ear and hearing problems. As he treated the patients in revolving door fashion, he realized he could better serve patients in a more relaxed atmosphere.

"Private practice is what I’ve wanted to do," Herring said. "I enjoy it so much more because I have the time to talk with patients about more that the actual visit. We talk about our kids and what is going on in our lives. I want to focus on improving the quality of life and making everything more personal. I get the chance to become friends with my patients and I really like that."

Herring understands that treating a patients hearing goes beyond just being able to hear the TV better. That's why he likes to involve the family as much as possible. A loved one's hearing problem affects everyone around them. Hearing problems are often obstacles to communication that lead to frustration and extra stress. By removing that obstacle, he is able to take that strain off the family.

"I like seeing the difference in the patient and the patient’s family from when they first come in to when they’ve been helped," Herring said. "Their able to enjoy each other again and communicate. I enjoy helping people do the things that people with normal hearing take for granted."

One of the key aspects of the care Herring provides at Listen Hear Audiology Center is the relaxed pace. He doesn’t overbook appointments and spaces them apart so that the patient never feels rushed. By giving the patient more time, Herring is able to involve them more in the process. Herring said he wants his patients to feel like they are in his living room instead of a clinic, and that approach has paid off.

Listen Hear Audiology Center provides many hearing-related services including audiometric evaluations, hearing aid services, and earwax management. Listen Hear also makes custom ear molds for earplugs and MP3 player earbuds, and canolith repositioning – a procedure used to treat benign positional paroxysmal vertigo.

Herring's goals as he moves forward with Listen Hear Audiology center around remembering what has brought him his early private practice success.

"I never want to become too big," Herring said. "I want to be able to maintain a patient focus that allows me to spend the proper amount of time with each patient. If we get more patients than I can handle, I'll bring in another doctor, but I want to always try to do what has worked for me here at the beginning."

For now, though, Herring is happy to know that his loyal following of patients have made him a 2009 Readers’ Choice award winner.

"It is the highest form of praise to be lifted up by your patients and friends," Herring said. "I can’t thank my loyal patients enough for their support for over 13 years."
