Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees has won the American League MVP award, and St. Louis Cardinals slugger Paul Goldschmidt took the NL prize. After hitting 62 home runs this season to break the AL record, Judge easily beat out Los Angeles Angels two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani in an MVP race s…
LOS ANGELES — This should be a banner week for Shohei Ohtani, baseball's truly global superstar. This is the week the American League most valuable player and Cy Young awards are announced; Ohtani finished fourth in Cy Young voting and is a finalist for MVP. On Thursday, Ohtani declared that…
It didn't take Justin Verlander long to realize he could have a special year after missing almost two full seasons recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Houston’s Justin Verlander in the American League and Miami’s Sandy Alcantara in the National League are both unanimous selections for the Cy Young Award. It’s the second time the winners in both leagues were unanimous since the award began in 1956. The 39-year-old Verlander won the award for the first time, having previously won in 2011 with Detroit and 2019 with Houston. He's the 11th player to win it three times. Verlander missed almost all of the previous two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He led the AL in ERA. Alcantara led the majors in complete games with six.

Bryce Harper walked away and into the offseason, one that could include surgery.
Manager Dusty Baker and general manager James Click aren’t yet under contract.
Six summers ago, I walked into a downtown Chicago hotel room to the sight of Dusty Baker ironing his pants in his boxers and a T-shirt. Baker was managing the Washington Nationals, and I had stopped by his hotel for an interview in June 2016 about his career and a budding rivalry with the Chicago Cubs. After such a painful ending in Chicago 10 years earlier, Baker really wasn’t interested in ...
Astros fans are celebrating after Houston won its second World Series title in six seasons Saturday by defeating the Phillies in Game 6 of the 2022 World Series.
Baker talks about his family and his first World Series win as manager.
HOUSTON — An hour before Game 6, John Middleton stood in the tunnel that led to the field at Minute Maid Park. He was told to enjoy the evening. His Phillies faced elimination in the World Series, the title Middleton has coveted since 2009. “It’s hard to enjoy it,” he replied. “John,” he was told, “this is all bonus.” “You know what?” he replied. “You’re right.” Four hours later, the Phillies ...
HOUSTON — Zack Wheeler had more to give. Let that sink in. Let it wash over you. Who knows what would have happened if the Phillies allowed their best pitcher to face Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez in the sixth inning Saturday night? Maybe the result winds up being the same. Maybe it doesn’t. But this much we do know: Wheeler’s 70th pitch in the sixth game of the 118th World Series was ...
Major League Baseball's offseason is here. Follow the latest developments, signings and more.
The 2022 baseball season might one day be remembered for the lockout, Aaron Judge’s pursuit of Roger Maris’ American League home run record and a combined World Series no-hitter by the Houston Astros. That’s if it’s remembered at all. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching the World Series between the Astros and Philadelphia Phillies, but I’m starting to have doubts whether anyone will look back on ...
Dusty Baker has been here before. It’s hard not to think of the last time the Astros’ manager was up 3-2 in the Fall Classic as he leads the team back to Houston Saturday night for Game 6 of the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies needing just one win for a championship. In 2002, Baker’s San Francisco Giants entered Game 6 against the Anaheim Angels up by the same margin. The Giants squandered a five-run lead in a 6-5 loss in the sixth game before the Angels won the title with a 4-1 win in Game 7. Twenty years later in his third trip to the World Series, Baker is still looking for that elusive championship after a quarter-century as a major league manager.
He became the oldest manager to win a World Series in his third trip as a manager to the Fall Classic. He entered the series as the winningest manager without a title and improved to 2,094-1,790 with this most memorable victory.
