Write upon the heavens

Zoltan

fly up, fly up

clad in golden wings

clear the sky

break the firmament

take your place

fulfill your destiny

write upon the heavens

your song.

Zoltan

friend, mentor, teacher

how I miss your

whispered kindness

before humbled knowledge

thunderous wrath

before arrogant ignorance

foggy leaves

now upon trees distant.

Zoltan

how you loved books

you devoured knowledge

splendid knowledge

living in exile

between heaven and hell

feared by most

understood by few

embraced by you.

Zoltan

in your darkened den,

lined with volumes old and new

revealing the past

seeking the future

Serbia's widow condemned

all arguments done

before her craggy soul

drenched in Hungary's blood.

Zoltan

as a twig in youth

without canopy or strength

German and Russian bombs

raining on your beloved soil

in darkness you lay hidden

protected by cold earth

the silence of distant stars

breathing a miracle.

Zoltan

who can know the meaning

of your broken pain

of your sacred treasure

your history is not graced

at your bedside

at your table

just alone

in the everlasting light.

Zoltan

who will look over your

writing hands

who will love and protect your books

in your silence

your soul soars

and I mourn

I mourn all your wisdom.

Zoltan

how you endured

pianos learning to dance

never a complaint

the patience of calm seas

Hildegaard von Bingen

the depth of love

pearls among the angels

the perfected crown.

Zoltan

from Arpad and Istvan

to Gellert and your ancestors

your allegiance was steadfast

duty to your forefathers

faithful to your love

adoration for your children

you dwelled in justice

forgiveness for all.

Zoltan

now the winds continue

the echo of your life

the reckoning is here

and I proudly stand

abreast the landscape

and sing your song

the song of man

the song of my friend.

farewell Zoltan

farewell my friend.
