AUSTIN - A woman accused of stabbing her estranged husband's dog 27 times will go to trial on animal cruelty charges after rejecting a plea bargain that included a prison sentence.

Joanne Lee Hinojosa, 33, is accused of seriously injuring the dog during an argument with her husband last year. The dog, a 20-pound mixed breed named Marti, was later euthanized.

Hinojosa's trial is scheduled to begin in August.

Prosecutors had offered a plea bargain with prison time. But at a court hearing Wednesday, Hinojosa's lawyer, Rip Collins, said his client should not go to prison.

Collins has said that Hinojosa was suffering mental stress from a breakup with Reyes Martinez when the dog was stabbed in January 2006.
