Afternoon showers were possible across much of the Lone Star State on Tuesday as scorching temperatures return.

In Dallas-Fort Worth, a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms was forecast after 1 p.m. under mostly sunny skies. The high should climb near 100. The low should fall to around 78 degrees.

Similar rain chances were in the forecast for the Houston area, with a high near 99 and the heat index values as high as 108. The low should drop to around 79.

A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms was also in the Panhandle forecast for the afternoon hours. A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms was forecast in the initial hours of Wednesday morning. The low should drop to around 66 degrees.

Plenty of sunshine was also expected in the Rio Grande Valley with a high near 97 in the Brownsville area. Heat index values could climb as high as 104. The low should drop to around 79.
