DALLAS - A man who barricaded himself inside an apartment fatally shot his 3-year-old son when police stormed inside early Wednesday, then killed himself when police fired at him, authorities said.

The standoff lasted about five hours before police entered the home about 6:30 a.m., Dallas police Sgt. Jamie Matthews said. Authorities saw a woman fleeing the apartment and holding a 2-year-old as they responded to a domestic disturbance call there, she said.

The father first shot the boy when police stormed inside, then shot himself as police fired at him, Matthews said.

The man was identified as Leon Ovalle, 43, and his son as Leon Ovalle Jr.

The officer involved in the shooting was identified as Senior Cpl. Rich Emberlin, a member of SWAT.
