Retiree Doris Machinski has filed to run for Bryan City Council Single Member District 4 on Wednesday.

The position is currently held by councilman Mike Southerland.

In a Facebook statement, Machinski said she made the decision to run for council because she no longer wanted to “be a person dismayed by the events occurring in my community in regard to fairness and equality for all and not actively helping to provide solutions.”

“Yes, I know this will be difficult and I know there will be struggles,” her statement reads. “I also know I love a challenge and the people in our community. Our community and the people living here are worth it.”

On Monday, local business owner Bobby Gutierrez was the first to file to run for Bryan City Council. The candidate is seeking Greg Owens’ Single Member District 3 seat.

Filing is open in Bryan and College Station through Aug. 17.
