Eagle Staff Report

Two local men remained jailed Saturday after police said they attempted to steal $2,645 worth of scrap metal.

Bryan police on Friday responded to a report of a theft in progress near the intersection of Brookhaven and Boatwright streets when a witness reported seeing two men load the metal into the back of a truck.

When police arrived, one man tried to flee but was caught quickly. According to the police report, they questioned the men about the metal and they originally said they had permission to move the property.

An investigation revealed the metal was stolen.

Stephen Alonzo Austin, 39, of College Station and Mark Douglas Shields, 44, of Bryan both were arrested on the state jail felony theft charge -- punishable by up to two years imprisonment.

Shields received an additional charge for evading arrest and his bail was set at $17,000.

Austin remained jailed without bail because of a parole violation.
