An Iola man was killed early Sunday when he lost control of his car on F.M. 244 in Grimes County.

Joshua Andrew Cotton, a 24-year-old engineer, was driving north when he veered off the road and struck a tree less than a mile south of Carlos, according to Texas Department of Public Safety reports.

The accident happened about 3:15 a.m. Sunday. Cotton, who troopers said was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene about 45 minutes later. His body was sent to Southeast Texas Forensic Center in Conroe for an autopsy, according to DPS reports.

His passenger, Katherine Elecia Williams, 28, of Bryan, was taken to the College Station Medical Center in serious condition, DPS said. She had not been wearing a seat belt, officials said.

Williams is listed as a student in DPS reports. She is included in the Texas A&M University online directory, but the entry doesn't detail her class standing.
