College Station resident Bohn Lance Hilliard pleaded guilty Monday to stealing more than $250,000 from the Ryder rental truck company where he worked.

Pending approval from a district judge, Hilliard will receive 10 years of probation for the first-degree felony, which is punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for May 29.

Bryan police began investigating the matter after an internal audit was conducted last year at Ryder's Carson Street offices. Police determined that Hilliard, 39, had forged and cashed company checks, which the defendant later estimated totaling between $250,000 and $300,000.

Hilliard told police that he had been experiencing financial difficulties, so he set up a computerized account in which Ryder customers entered their personal information and were given an identification code. The system allowed Hilliard to register the checks in the database, then cash them at various local stores, according to reports.

Officials with the local Ryder Truck company could not be reached Monday evening.
