A Navasota man has been charged with stealing batteries and a rifle scope from a College Station store.

Officers were dispatched to Walmart, at 1815 Brothers Blvd., about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. A shopper spotted Wesley Parker Muth hiding batteries and a rifle scope in his clothes, according to a police report.

Police found 22 loose batteries and more than $200 in change in his pockets, reports state. Muth told police he planned to sell the batteries because he couldn't afford them, authorities said. He said he removed the rifle scope from its package to get a better look at it and must have accidentally dropped it in his wife's purse, police said.

Muth, 43, later admitting to the theft of both items and said his wife was unaware he'd placed the scope in her purse, according to police reports.

Muth was charged with theft of property worth between $50 and $500, and the charge was enhanced to a state jail felony because he has two previous convictions.

He remained in the Brazos County Jail on Wednesday morning without bail.
