A 48-year-old Bryan man has been arrested on charges of hitting his wife with a baseball bat.

Bryan police said officers were dispatched about 10:15 p.m. Monday to a home in the 2900 block of Prairie Flower Circle.

When officers arrived, they found a woman holding a towel to the right side of her head, surrounded by a large amount of blood on the wall and floor. She was taken to St. Joseph hospital in Bryan, where she received seven stitches, according to police reports.

The woman told police she'd been married to Perry Dewayne Mitchell for 20 years and their relationship had been riddled with abuse, according to police reports. The couple was fighting when the woman got a baseball bat to protect herself, but Mitchell took the bat and hit his wife with it, police said.

Mitchell was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000.

He remained in the Brazos County Jail on Tuesday on $15,000 bail.
