NASA astronaut Steve Swanson is the second Aggie to go into space within a year.

Swanson earned a doctorate in computer science from Texas A&M University in 1998. He also holds degrees from the University of Colorado and Florida Atlantic University.

In July, Mike Fossum, class of 1980, performed three spacewalks as part of the space shuttle Discovery crew, becoming the school's first recipient of an undergraduate degree to fly aboard a space shuttle.

The first Aggie into space was William Pailes, who earned his master's degree from Texas A&M in 1981 and flew aboard an Atlantis mission in 1985.

Swanson joined NASA in 1987 as a systems engineer. He started astronaut training in 1998.
