The Bryan school board recognized two employees Monday night as part of its teacher of the month series.

Trina Knapek, kindergarten teacher at Sam Houston Elementary, was selected for the amount of pride she takes in her work and ensuring every child is successful.

Superintendent Thomas Wallis read a note that was sent to the school's principal by a parent.

"Mrs. Knapek did something very special for Caden on Friday and I want to share it with you. She wrote the sweetest note and a certificate for him. He was very shy at first at meet the teacher and would not talk or really even look at her. Right as we were leaving, he decided to tell her 'goodbye.' She wrote him a little note telling him how brave he was. ... When we read it to him he was very excited."

Also recognized Monday was Keith Jackson, eighth-grade math teacher and boys athletics coordinator at Jane Long Middle School.

His principal wrote in the nomination letter that Jackson has a knack for building rapport with students and is a leader to fellow colleagues.

"He genuinely cares about delivering top-notch instruction and sees his professional growth as the key to student success. ... He is leading the way in developing solid relationships with the families of our athletes, maintaining high expectations for any student that wears a Lobo jersey and communicating that academics come first."

The awards will be given each month. Citibank is underwriting the award and giving gift certificates to the winners.
