Lady Tigers win at tourney

One good game against a struggling team doesn't represent a landslide victory, but A&M Consolidated girls basketball coach Sue Betts liked Wednesday's early returns on the new-look Lady Tigers.

Consolidated rolled over Oak Ridge, 71-45, as the Lady Tigers debuted a new lineup, moving sophomore Carli Kolbe out of the post to the perimeter and starting Courtney Oberg at post.

The victory in the first round of the All-Star Invitational lifted Consol's girls to 9-9 overall. The Lady Tigers will return to Tiger Gym to play Aldine Nimitz at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the second round.

Oak Ridge dropped to 3-14 on the season. The Lady War Eagles made the Class 5A playoffs last year, but Oak Ridge is struggling with a lineup reliant on several juniors and sophomores.

The Lady War Eagles were the perfect opponent for Consol - not quite good enough to prevent the Lady Tigers from working on their new attack.

Kolbe scored 11 points and had six rebounds in her new role.

"I think the switch is going to work pretty good," Betts said. "I thought we got more rebounds and more looks at the basket for Carli by pulling her out. I think we'll stay with that."

Consol trailed by two points after the first quarter, but the Lady Tigers took command with a 28-7 blitz in the second period. Consol built a 41-22 halftime lead, and Oak Ridge never got closer than 17 points after intermission.

The lopsided second half might have been meaningful for Consol because that's when sophomore guard Sarah Daily flourished in what Betts called her best game of the season. Daily came off the bench to score 12 points, all in the fourth quarter.

"Sarah wants to go in and take the game," Betts said. "Tonight, she sat back and let the game come to her. Once she did, then she really played ball."

Freshman guard Consolo Palmer led the Lady Tigers with 13 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers to start the game, and grabbed nine rebounds. Senior post Alicia Maxwell contributed a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Sienna Heller topped Oak Ridge with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
