The A&M Consolidated girls basketball team stole one from The Woodlands on Tuesday night.

Consolidated didn't get lucky. The Lady Tigers earned their 55-47 victory with a fourth quarter filled with thievery.

The Lady Tigers (8-6) forced 12 turnovers in the fourth quarter - 10 of them the result of a full-court press - to outscore the Lady Highlanders, 31-11, in the final period.

"I feel like we found the 'on' switch," Consol coach Sue Betts said. "We seemed to have the right combination in there for a scramble that we had to go to. They turned it on and did a great job of putting pressure on them."

For most of the surge, the lineup included guards Sarah Daily and Consolo Palmer, forwards Carli Kolbe and Tori Williams, and post Alicia Maxwell.

The Woodlands (5-8) melted in the fourth quarter, allowing the Lady Tigers to score 12 points off the Lady Highlander turnovers.

"We decided last weekend that we were going to have to pick the best time to press and when not to," Betts said. "We wanted to keep our girls a little fresher, and I think it paid off tonight when we decided to put the press on."

Consol trailed, 36-24, after three periods, but scored 11 consecutive points to start the fourth quarter, revving up the girl basketball players in the stands for Junior High Night at Tiger Gym. Daily had a 3-pointer and made a fast-break layup on an assist by Palmer after a turnover during the charge.

The Woodlands finally scored on a rebound basket by Heather Anderson for a 38-35 lead, but it was the only basket for the Lady Highlanders in a span of 6 minutes, 35 seconds.

Consol answered Anderson's basket with a 13-0 run that included seven points by Maxwell, the team's leading scorer from last season who was playing in her third game after returning from a major knee injury.

The Woodlands didn't get closer than six points in the final 2 minutes.

"The Woodlands beat us pretty handily the last two years," Betts said. "Coming from that far down to beat The Woodlands should give these kids a lot of encouragement."

The Lady Tigers staggered through the first half, falling behind by 25-15 because of woeful shooting.

Senior guard Laura Thomas poured in three 3-pointers and hit 3 of 4 shots in the half, but the rest of the team missed 17 of 18 shots, many of them from close range.

"I have to give Laura Thomas credit," Betts said. "I think she kept us in the game with her 3's in the first half.

"I told them that they had to keep shooting it and they'll start to fall. Sure enough, they did in the fourth quarter."

There was more drought before the floodgates opened, however. The Lady Tigers missed their first nine shots of the third as the lead swelled to 32-15.

Maxwell, who finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, made a driving shot with 3:10 left in the quarter to stop the skid.

Betts said Maxwell's return and Williams' defensive play have given the Lady Tigers a boost. Williams started the game defending 6-foot forward Anderson and then switched to Brittany Caporale after the 5-4 point guard hurt Consol in the first half.

"I don't think we can say enough about Tori's defense," Betts said.
