Brenham man arrested on aggravated assault charges

Eagle staff report

A Brenham man accused of shooting a Bryan man and trying to run over him with a car has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

Bond for Reuben Charles Toliver, 52, was set Saturday at $150,000.

Police responding to a Friday morning disturbance at 1201 San Jacinto in Bryan said they found Toliver in a Mercury Cougar driving forward as if to hit Harold Turner, who was lying on the ground.

Turner had been shot in the leg. After getting out of the car, Toliver told police he did it, according to an officer’s sworn affidavit.

Toliver told police he went to visit Turner, who started yelling and beating him and his car with a rake, court documents state. Toliver said he accidentally drove into a sliding glass door of the house while trying to leave.

When Turner cursed him and his dead grandmother, Toliver said he fired three shots at the man, court documents state.

Turner had a different story, according to court documents. He said Toliver showed up and drove the car into him and the glass door, so he started hitting the vehicle with a rake. Turner said he went to call police, and that Toliver shot him as he returned.
