TOYOTA HIGHLANDER
STATUS: New for 2020 — If the Sienna
minivan doesn’t appeal to you for various
family-type duties, then perhaps the fourthgeneration Highlander should be on your
radar. This family bus has been redesigned
and enlarged and now provides more stowage
and passenger space across three rows of
seats. Up to eight people will enjoy a wellappointed cabin and a comfortable ride, traits
that have always been Highlander hallmarks.
The previous 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine is
out, but the 3.5-liter V-6 is carried over with
295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque.
A brand new 240-horsepower hybrid power

team consists of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder
engine plus two electric motors. That’s less
than the previous hybrid’s 306-horsepower
output, but in return you get greater (by a
claimed 17 percent) fuel efficiency. Both
powertrains can be had with front- or optional
all-wheel-drive. Even with a full house of
people and their belongings, the Highlander
can tow up to 5,000 pounds, which is plenty
for hauling a modestly sized travel trailer
or a boat. Toyota provides a number of key
crash-avoiding dynamic-safety features as
standard equipment for all Highlander trim
levels.
